“I look forward to the African Mediation Conference and other programs of ICMC” Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President, Court of Appeal

On the 30th of September, 2020, the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Court of Appeal; Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem. 


The delegation from the Institute was led by Emeka J.P. Obegolu, FICMC, FCIArb, the ICMC President. Others in the delegation were Chief (Dr.) Paddy Njoku; Past President of the Institute, Dr. Agada Elachi; Past Registrar of the Institute, Chief J-K Gadzama, SAN; Member, ICMC Governing Council, Chief Aniazoka M.C. Zokas; Chair, ICMC Awka Branch and Chair, Industrial Arbitration Panel, Lloyd Duru; Vice President, Exams & Records, ICMC, Aisha Ado Abdullahi; Deputy Registrar, ICMC, and Chimdimma Onyedebelu; Head, Training & Marketing, ICMC. 


Emeka Obegolu congratulated Hon. Justice Dongban-Mensem on her appointment as the President of the Court of Appeal, and pledged the support of the Institute. He informed her that the Institute celebrated her 20th Anniversary on the 1st of December, 2019 during her annual Conference and Induction Ceremony, which had over 1,000 ADR practitioners in attendance. 


The ICMC President stated further that the Institute will be holding her African Mediation Conference, the first of its kind, themed “Transnational Commercial Mediation: Leveraging Options and Intersections in Africa”, on the 1st of December, 2020, and is partnering with over 20 prominent ADR organizations across the globe to interrogate the issues and developments surrounding the business of Mediation and international commercial Mediation. 


He informed Hon. Justice Dongban-Mensem that the Institute would be pleased to have her in attendance as a Special Guest of Honour, and to confer on her the award of Honorary Fellowship of the Institute. 


Emeka Obegolu appreciated the substantial workload placed on the Justices of the Court of Appeal, and offered the professional and technical services of the Institute in supporting the Court of Appeal through the Court of Appeal Mediation Centre established in 2018. 


The President of the Court of Appeal warmly welcomed the ICMC delegation, and congratulated the Institute on celebrating the great milestone of 20 years in existence. She expressed her appreciation of the Institute’s concern for the Court of Appeal Mediation Centre, and stated that she believes the support of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators will add much value to the Centre. 


Hon. Justice Dongban-Mensem stated that she looks forward to the support of the Institute, the Institute’s African Mediation Conference, and her other programs. 


The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators is the professional body of dispute resolution practitioners with the mandate to regulate the practice of Mediation, train prospective candidates, and encourage organizations and institutions to adopt Mediation and Conciliation as the primary mechanisms for resolving disputes.
